The Rules
1. All events carried out in game must be delivered to the masses in media format.
2. All Pokémon used within the party must be caught by the Trainer playing the Game. Traded and gifted Pokémon with the exception of the Starter are considered to be inadmissible. Any team found to be using Pokémon brought in from an external source are considered to be immediately forfeited.
3. All Pokémon captured must be given unique names in the interest of creating a sense of care for the Pokémon in question.
4. The Trainer may only catch the first Pokémon they encounter within a given location, with locations being denoted anytime the name of the place changes. Ie. Route 2 and Hau'oli Cemetary are considered to be two separate locations. Failure to catch this first Pokémon, ie. Golisopod's Emergency Exit, or if the Pokémon faints, is considered to be a death. As such the Trainer may not catch anymore Pokémon within that location.
5. The Trainer may never flee from a battle regardless of situation or extenuating circumstances.
6. Should the Trainer have more than six Pokémon that they have caught, they may switch between these captured Pokémon as they like.
7. Should a Pokémon on the Trainer's team faint, it is considered dead and must be released into the wild.
8. Should all of the Trainer's Pokémon faint, or should they have no more Pokémon, their game is considered over.
9. The Starter Pokémon must be randomized through the use of the Trainer ID. The final numeral in the Trainer ID equates as follows: 1 - 3 Grass Starter, 4 - 6 Fire Starter, 7 - 9 Water Starter, 0 - Trainer's discretion.
10. The Master Challenge must be undertaken from the very start of the game, and the Trainer may not use any other external sources or media in order to aid or facilitate their gameplay.
Episode #0 - A Prelude to Evening
I'd done it many times before. A small boy, growing up in a small town, off to the see the world on a big adventure. My Starter Pokémon and gang of filler Pokémon by my side, I'd step out into the wilds of each new region and being fighting my way to the nearest gym. I'd take the badges and then duke it out with the Elite Four, inevitably resulting in my crowning as the champion of my region. Times were good, but eventually I got bored of the tedium that was Pokémon. After all, once you've become champion what else is there to do? I could engage my friends in battles, but in order to do so I'd have to raise the perfect Pokémon. In order to get the perfect Pokémon I'd end up breeding my creatures late into the night only to meet with hours of disappointment. It made for a lot of tedium, and eventually Pokémon lost its charm for me.
It was then that I heard the whispers.
In small and hushed circles, people had begun to talk about a challenge. A challenge so profound that it left Trainers shocked and stunned when it drew to its conclusion. Many claimed that only the sternest and most devout Trainers could possible even attempt this challenge, because for the first time Pokémon was not simply about battling gym leaders and moving on with your life. No, it was about protecting your Pokémon and making diligent and meticulously thought out moves in order to bring your team to victory. The long standing condition for this being that if your Pokémon fainted, that was it, it was gone for good. So long, don't forget to write.
Naturally, the idea of this challenge perked my interest, and it was then that I met him. The Master.
He talked a lot for an old man, but always with the same sobering tone of voice. Despite the boring voice and lazy eye, the old guy had sought me out for many days and would frequently follow me on my travels. To hear him tell the story, there was a lot going on in the universe, things that even he couldn't understand. I had my doubts at the time, but as he went on with his supposed ravenous ramblings, it occurred to me that perhaps there was a grain of truth to be found in the torrent of his madness. He told about the Keys, seventy-two Pokémon capable of carrying a Champion out from the depths of defeat and into victory across all the regions. It was interesting to hear him speak of my supposed glorious future, and slowly but surely I began to take his words to heart, though I never let him know it.
I carried his words with me all the way to my new home in the Alola region. My mother often claimed that she wanted to come to Alola in order to see the beautiful types of Pokémon native to the region, but I knew the truth. After my father had gone off to become a gym leader, she'd taken the divorce harder than she had let on. Naturally, she wasn't happy about my taking up the mantle of Trainer yet again, but she wanted for me to have my own ways. So with her blessing I set off on a journey around the Alola region.
After overcoming many trials, I was faced with the task of suppressing the Ultra Beasts, creatures of terror and strength from a dimension beyond our own. It was as I neared the conclusion of this task that the Master's words returned to me more vividly and with a more startling clarity than before. During my final encounter with an escaping Ultra Beast, I fell through the Ultra Worm Hole it had come from, and I found myself transported back. Gone were the Pokémon who I had travelled with up to that point, and gone were the memories of me that my friends had acquired through our long travels together.
Thrown back in time, I realized what I had to do in order to return to my old time. I had to acquire the seventy-two Pokémon, known only as the Keys. It was the start of a new journey, one that would take me to the depths of hell, and hopefully, back again.
This, was the start of my Master Challenge.
