From time immemorial, humans have dreamed about what is beyond the atmosphere of our planet. The deep and dark depths of space have always held a quiet romance that belies the struggles that inhabit the field of space exploration. It is because of the overwhelming sense of wonder and mystery that people first began thinking up concepts that would later form one of the most popular aspects of science fiction. From verbiage to equipment, traveling in outer space has taken on a surreal quality through the efforts of many science fiction buffs. However it is this very quality that makes it difficult for those who are not wholly familiar with the genre to get engrossed in stories involving FTL (Faster Than Light) Engines, Floating and time traveling Doctors whose seasons may or may not extend into the double digits. Thankfully, Dark Matter, while still employing sci-fi jargon, is a relatively new series about interstellar travel that is sure to peak the interest of anyone regardless of their preferred genre.
Originally a comic series by Dark Horse two years ago, Dark Matter was picked up for a loosely based television adaptation. Dark Matter follows the story of six people, four men and two women, who are traveling on a ship in outer space. Given that their destination is very far away, the crew programs the ships computer to pilot them to their destination while they enter stasis. The crew soon find themselves suffering from a rude awakening when the ships life support systems begin to fail. One by one each of the crew members awaken and set about stabilizing their ship and its affiliated systems. There is, however, one small issue. None of the crew members can recall who they are, or why they are on the ship. This prompts the members of the ship to dub themselves by the numerical order in which they awoke, and serves as a basis for doubt and mistrust between the companions.
While the premise of Dark Matter is not exactly new, the writers and directors have done an exceptional job of turning the series into an exciting mystery series. At its core, the newly awakened crew is on a mission to discover who they are, where they came from, and why they are currently on their ship. However there are a host of subplots interwoven throughout the series, and these plots add an incredible level of depth and complexity to the characters portrayed in Dark Matter. These plots aid in not only furthering the story but developing characters in new and often unexpected ways. Even if the mystery, characters, or setting are not your favorites, this series is still worth watching for the cliffhangers alone.
Joseph Mallozi and Paul Mullie, the creators of the Dark Matter television series, have truly out done themselves with the cliffhangers that end each episode. The shock value of the reveals that come with the conclusion of each episode are riveting to watch and provide an overwhelming reason to immediately pick up the next episode in the series. Given that Dark Matter only has thirteen episodes, the cliffhangers are sure to keep viewers glued to their screens until the credits of the final episode.
Dark Matter has a way of getting under the skin of its viewers, and once started it is fairly challenging to stop watching midway through the season. While there are currently only thirteen episodes, Dark Matter has been renewed for another season, and if prior episodes are any indicator the coming season is bound to continue amazing its audience. While there are instances of poor cinematography, Dark Matter retains a hoard of compelling qualities that are sure to delight audiences regardless. If you haven't had the pleasure of watching Dark Matter, now is definitely the time to go and get it done!
