PAUSE: This article is NOT, in fact, about sculpting.
There are a lot of really amazing MMORPG styled manga and manhwa out there. VRMMORPGs, or Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games are growing in popularity, both as a storytelling medium and as a potentially lucrative real world business idea. Stories like Hack Sign, and Sword Art Online have even seen international acclaim around the globe, and despite the potential dangers of VR (Virtual Reality) that these stories predicate many companies are pushing R&D for VR technologies. If you're a gamer it is a really exciting time to be alive, and if you are a reader who loves the idea of being trapped in a life/death video game then it is a really exciting time to be alive. Both manga and manhwa have talked a lot about a variety of VR scenarios in their stories, but there aren't many that can claim the same standard of brilliance and aesthetic found in The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor.
If you've never read The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor then you'll probably want to go and read this manhwa shortly after finishing this article. Of the hundreds of comics that I have read, there aren't many that can claim a compelling story, beautiful artistry, frustrating and realistic characters, and a stunning game concept. The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is a manhwa written by duo Lee Do Gyeong and Nam Hee Sung, with artwork by Kim Tae Hyung. I'd like to tell you more about these heroic individuals, but sadly there isn't a whole lot of information on their works. By which I mean, none of it is readily accessible in English. Suffice to say, however, that this trio brings together an incredible story that is both moving and awe inspiring in its capacity.
Protagonist, Lee Hyun, is living an impoverished life with his elderly grandmother and younger sister. Everyday, he does what he can to make ends meet while looking out for his family. Having reached the legal age of adulthood in Korea, Lee Hyun receives his Korean ID Card, entitling him to better employment opportunities and wages. This and the compounding problems of his home life convinces him to sell off his Continent of Magic character known as "Weed". NOTE: Weed is meant to be a reference to the fact that he comes from a low standing position in society and has nothing to do with Mary Jane.
Ironically, it turns out that "Weed" is known throughout Continent of Magic as the God of War. By selling his incredibly overpowered character in an online market, Lee Hyun sets of a chain of bidding wars around the world with many wealthy folks bidding on one of the most incredible characters in the online gaming world. In total, our hero bags himself 3.1 billion dollars ... no, I wrote that correctly, 3.1 BILLION DOLLARS! Confident that he can make the lives of him and his family a lot easier, Lee Hyun accepts the money only to have it taken away by loan sharks. Deprived of his chance at a better life, Lee Hyun vows to raise a new character in the new upcoming VRMMORPG Royal Road, sell off the character, and earn enough money to buy out the loan sharks that stole his wealth from him.
It's a lofty goal given that his last character had over 200+ hours of playtime, and that Royal Road has not yet been released to the mass public. Still, it is a start for our intrepid hero, and so the story continues on, with Lee Hyun training and diversifying himself in order to prepare for his arrival into Royal Road. From there the story really takes off as readers learn more about the lore of Royal Road, and follow Lee Hyun through peril after peril in a game with permadeath.
While The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor largely starts off as a bid for consumerism and the accumulation of wealth, Lee Hyun's journey is about the joys of gaming and the diligence that is required to achieve one's goals regardless of what it might be. The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is filled with action, comedy, drama, mystery, and even a little romance that serves to invigorate not only the story itself but readers as well. The triumphs of the characters are suitably epic in their capacity, and the comedy is laugh out loud in its hilarity.
In Korea, The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor was originally a novel before it was turned into a manhwa. One of the amazing things about this series is that it is still on going, with over forty volumes currently published and more on the way. It was because of its popularity as a novel that allowed The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor to be turned into a manhwa, so even if you find yourself unable to trust me and this lengthy article, you can rest assured that the story alone is incredible. I have full confidence that anyone that sticks with this series will find themselves loving it, so stop reading this article and go read The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor!
